First-hand experience of Gospel music; to acquaint students with the full variety of Gospel choral styles, especially those of the African American tradition, but also including African music, Contemporary Gospel, Traditional Gospel, spirituals, hymns, and anthems; and to have students share their work in public performances.

A comparative study of the African American dance forms in the U.S.A., Brazil, Haiti, Cuba, Jamaica,Barbados, and Trinidad. Examination of ritual, folk, and popular dance forms and socio/historical factors that have influenced these forms (same course as Dramatic Art 155A).

This course presents an overview of the youth-oriented culture of hip-hop through scholarly essays, news articles, videos, websites, and music recordings. We investigate the history, aesthetics, African Diaspora connections, the urban context, educational potential, economics, and institutional policing of hip hop in the United States.

AAS 190 (CRN 60019) The Politics of Resources

This course examines the ways in which the processes of the extraction, purification and use of natural resources by (wo)man in society produce complex dynamics. We explore how values are placed on resources and how such values and the regimes of valuation and commodification and the social formations that are (re)produced by these regimes lead to cooperation and conflict in contemporary African society and state - and beyond.
